Direct Seeding
With you every step of the way

What is direct seeding?
Direct Seeding is a way of establishing vegetation by placing seeds directly into prepared ground where they germinate and grow without disturbance. As there is no need to plant seedlings, it is the simplest and most cost effective way to establish native vegetation for shelter, screening, wildlife habitat, timber production or salinity control.

Direct seeding results in a dense, mixed, continuous cover of plants similar to natural bushland.
Stages of direct seeding

STEP 1
Choose the area for your shelter belt and prepare the land

STEP 2
Select species for the plantation

STEP 3
Plough and sow your plantation

STEP 4
Watch it grow
STEP 1
What sites are suitable?
Most Victoria landscapes that are accessible to prepare the land are suitable for direct seeding.
Some of the rarer soil types are not suitable. On steep mountainous landscapes, seed can be distributed using a seeding drone.

Preparing the site
Site preparation needs to be done to reduce competition with weeds and grasses leading up to direct seeding. It is commonly done using a herbicide. Site preparation can be conducted in the 12 months prior and up to a few days before direct seeding starts (depending on the site).

Herbicide can be missed if there are chemical restrictions on site.

STEP 2
Species selection
We use locally collected seed that are best adapted to your landscape. The seed will progressively germinate over at least two years, taking advantage of the most fruitful conditions.
There are many different variation of mixes as it is dependent on your locations and landscapes, but we typically use a mix of eucalypts, acacias and melaleucas and callistemons as the core of the revegetation mix with sheoak and tree everlasting and various grasses and sedges added.

STEP 3
Timing
Spring (August to November) is generally the best time for direct seeding in agricultural land.

Ploughing and Sowing
Ploughing is done with a mouldboard plough and seeding using the broadacre method.
In lower rainfall areas, a seeding machine is also suitable.

STEP 4
Watch it grow
Over the next two years, you will see periods where vegetation will lay more dormant, and other periods where it will boom. No watering or weed control is required.
